Vikings In Action Honored for Community Service Project

St. Elizabeth High School Vikings in Action Wins Public Service Pitch Day Competition to Represent Delaware at National Jefferson Awards
On Sunday, April 18, 2021, Students In Action teams from across Delaware competed virtually in Delaware’s Public Service Pitch Day. Despite the added challenges this year, student teams have completed a variety of community service projects throughout the 2020-21 school year. These teams then compiled their overall impact in a written survey ahead of the oral competition. On Sunday, teams selected one project to describe in detail: what service they completed, why they chose the project and beneficiary, the need it fulfills in their community, the impact, and what the students learned.

Through their efforts, Students in Action teams earned the following awards:
- St. Elizabeth High School: Gold Banner, Best Blog Award, Delaware Regional Winner

The 2021 Delaware regional winner of Public Service Pitch Day is St. Elizabeth High School
Vikings in Action for their work to support a local organization called Harper’s Heart. The St.
Elizabeth team met Giovanna Andrews, the founder of Harper’s Heart, several years ago and a
lasting friendship was formed. While they had planned a school wide collection of baby
essentials in the spring of 2020, the team had to cancel the event when the state went into
lockdown at the beginning of the global pandemic. This school year, the team was more
determined than ever to honor their commitment to Harper’s Heart and held a school wide
collection while still operating under a hybrid school model. The team developed a plan to
build excitement which included a promotional video from Giovanna, engaged each class with
a specific set of goals, and set up pack-n-plays as an effective visual reminder for students to
drop off donations. Through their team’s perseverance and creativity, the student body
responded with overwhelming generosity and the Vikings in Action collected over 850 baby
items to support Harper’s Heart. The St. Elizabeth High School Vikings in Action team plans to
continue to support Harper’s Heart and expand their collection as well as deepen their service
in the future.

Next the St. Elizabeth High School Vikings in Action team will represent Delaware at the virtual
National Public Service Pitch Day competition in June 2021.
