St. Elizabeth School Counseling

Consistent with the philosophy of St. Elizabeth High School and the Rule of St. Benedict, the School Counseling Department strives to foster the total development of students within the context of Christian values, primarily to find peace through stability and balance in their lives.  Through personal counseling and consultation, academic advisement, and career and college placement, the school counseling staff supports students in becoming effective learners and successful adults. Offering an “open door” policy, students may visit the school counseling office as needed, as all three school counselors are available daily for support and advisement. Strong rapport and consistency in the counselor/student relationship is crucial to student success; because of this, after freshman year, your son/daughter will be assigned the same counselor for the remainder of their high school experience.

Some functions of the School Counseling Department include:

  • Provide personal counseling
  • Coordinate the needs of students with learning differences
  • Offer information about standardized test prep, college and scholarships
  • Process all college applications
  • Provide career advisement and career days
  • Offer peer conflict resolution
  • Administer PSAT and AP testing
  • Provide information nights for parents and students regarding college admissions and financial aid
  • Provide guidance classroom instruction for all levels
  • Conduct individual meetings with all students each year

  • Freshman Counseling

    St. Elizabeth High School is committed to assisting all freshmen as they successfully transition into high school. The freshman counselor guides the class through their first high school academic year, holding quarterly meetings with freshman-level teachers to discuss the academic and social progress of the students, coordinating conferences between parents and teachers for students experiencing difficulty, and acting as a resource person for all freshmen in the areas of academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Upperclass Counseling and College Advisement

    Counselors are available daily for upperclassmen and will assist in any personal, academic or social issue that might arise. In addition, the counselors begin to work with students toward their post-graduate goals. It is never too early to begin thinking about and researching college options. In guidance classes, the counselors are preparing your son/daughter for the road ahead by assisting with test prep, researching career interests and exploring the multitude of majors, colleges and universities. As early as freshman year, your son/daughter will be introduced to our college/career online program called Family Connection. Each year, students will work with their counselors researching the college and career process, and continue to have access to Family Connection throughout the duration of high school.

College-Prep Tips:

  • Freshman Year

    • Establish good study habits early and start your high school career as strong as possible. It is more difficult to improve your G.P.A. later in your career.
    • Build relationships with your teachers; ask for assistance after class if you need it.
    • Look for opportunities to expand your creativity and get involved in leadership roles.
    • Participate in activity period; explore a wide variety of clubs to determine what your interests are.
  • Sophomore Year

    • If appropriate, challenge yourself with honors courses.
    • Read as much as possible. Reading can help improve your standardized testing scores and academic performance.
    • Continue to get involved in activities and clubs; seek opportunities for leadership roles.
  • Junior Year

    • Work on maintaining or improving your grades. Grades from your junior year and first semester of your senior year are the most important.
    • Review your PSAT scores to identify areas you may need to improve upon for the SATs.
    • Prepare for the ACT and SAT test.
    • Attend college visits offered by the counseling department.
    • Start planning college visits during weekends and breaks.
    • Identify two teachers to write a letter of recommendation.
  • Senior Year

    • Research colleges, look through guidebooks and plan campus visits.
    • Begin working on your college applications and schedule a meeting with your school counselor for assistance.
    • Write any deadlines for applications in your academic planner.
    • Register to retake the ACT and SAT test. Over two-thirds of students improve their scores on the second time around.
    • Keep your grades up.
    • Meet with college representatives in which you are interested when they visit St. E.
    • Have your school counselor review your application before your submit it.
    • Inform your school counselor of your college choice in order to have your final transcript sent to the correct school.

Students with Learning Differences

St. Elizabeth School recognizes that all individuals learn differently. The Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Coordinator offers guidance, collates all appropriate documentation, teaches study skill strategies and acts as an academic coach for these students throughout their career.  The SSD Coordinator also acts as a liaison between the teacher, student, and parent/guardian to ensure that all appropriate accommodations are met.
