Philosophy & Vision
Sports - Training Ground for Virtue, Teaching Discipline, Perseverance and Humility
The Viking Philosophy is that "Athletics" offers far more than physical fitness—it is a vital part of forming the whole child in mind, body, and spirit. In our Catholic school community, sports is viewed as a training ground for virtue, teaching discipline, perseverance, humility in victory, and grace in defeat. St. Elizabeth is one of the few Catholic schools in Delaware that offers an athletic program for Grades 3-12, including an intramural league. Hundreds of students participate in athletics each year, many playing multiple sports.
We believe that a coach plays a pivotal role as both mentor and witness to the faith, guiding young athletes to compete with integrity, encourage one another, and use their gifts for God’s glory. Rooted in the Gospel, sports help students grow as stewards of their God-given talents, fostering teamwork and respect for the dignity of every person. As St. Paul reminds us, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it” (1 Corinthians 9:24).
In this way, our athletic programs—and the faithful leadership of our coaches—inspire students to strive not only for success on the field, but for the ultimate prize—eternal life with Christ.
